Making recycling pay (more) in Nicaragua

The Enterprise and Employment project is helping Nicaragua transform trash into export-quality treasure. Through an alliance with Reciclaje y Negocios Internacionales (RENISA), one of the leading recyclable materials collectors in Nicaragua, the project is providing training and finance to informal producers of recycled goods.

In the streets and dumps of the capital Managua, people collect aluminum cans, which producers make into pots and pans. With E&E’s assistance, these small businesses will improve the durability and quality of cookware so they can demand higher prices and sell to larger firms. Stationery and picture frames are getting a design makeover to attract more customers.

Improving these products is expected to generate 100 new jobs. E&E will also help launch a communications program to raise awareness on the importance of recycling, including a national forum. And of course, making trash collection profitable will lead to a cleaner environment in Managua’s neighborhoods
